From the moment everyone had come through the portals to now, Steve had been fighting to keep everyone safe. Bucky, Sam, Wanda… Clint… Peter… Especially Tony. He knew they’d made their peace with one another, but he didn’t know if the man truly understand exactly how much Steve loved him, how much he would do, how far he would go…

Steve got to Scott’s van just as it was blown up and he caught the gauntlet as it was knocked away from the group surrounding the van. Thanos was on him a moment later, wrestling it from his grasp but Steve was smart. He’d been quick. And he’d grabbed the gauntlet from the compound when it had blown up earlier. He had seen Tony and Bruce working on it and knew what it was capable of doing. As Thanos put it on, the gauntlet wrapped around Steve’s hand, summoning the stones without Thanos seeing it.

Thanos snapped… and nothing happened. The entire battlefield was quiet until a sharp gasp sounded and every single eye turned to see Steve Rogers, barely standing, looking a bit dazed at the power from the stones. Thanos looked at him in shock.

“How…” the villain growled angrily.

Steve’s gaze slid towards Tony once more. “Whatever it takes,” he said, just before he snapped his own fingers.

A blinding light surrounded him and he could feel pain lance through him as the power of all the stones were wielded to end Thanos’ war against humanity. For a moment, Steve thought he’d vanished himself, but his eyes cleared and he saw Thanos and his army disappearing in clouds of ash and smoke. He let out a choked sound as his legs finally gave out and he dropped to his knees, fighting to stay conscious and breathe as much as he could.

Steve leaned against him, eyes closing slightly as he did so. The press of Tony’s hand rubbing along his back was perfect. “You’re perfect to me… you’re all I need. And I am just happy to have you here with me.” He sighed softly. “How long have you had this place?”

Tony smiled softly when he heard the other and he took a very deep breath just relaxing in the seat. “I had this not long after I came back from the blip, from the snap, from whatever you wanted to call it. Gave me time to just…enjoy the peace and quiet, to just…be…”

He let out a choked sound as his legs finally gave out and he dropped to his knees, fighting to stay conscious and breathe as much as he could.

Steve had seen the scars on the side of his face and neck. He knew they went down along his side and shoulder. He knew a good many of them would never completely go away. But, it was the price he’d been willing to pay to save the people he loved.

They’d been in Wakanda for a week when Shuri and Stephen both decided he was good to return back to New York and to Tony’s cabin. Stephen offered to simply open a portal at the cabin itself, to make things easier for them. Steve could walk, but it was still slow. Bucky and Sam had been sent off to do some work for SHIELD so Rhodey had come to help that day. Steve refused any kind of wheelchair, determined to walk himself out of that medical room and onto the grounds of the property Tony owned where the cabin was… where they would be living from now on.

Tony had done everything he could to help Steve through everything, to help him heal, knowing what it could be like recovering from injuries like that before. It had taken time but Steve was had been doing really well.

In the time they had been there together Steve had began to walk, had began to manage himself, began to learn how accept the limits of his whole body. When they were told that they were ready for him to move on, ready for him to be at the cabin, and he made sure they’d had everything ready stocked for them both. He had stayed close to help Steve get up, to help him walk to the protal glad they could get to the space safe.

“You ready to see your new home handsome?” He brought him to the front door and smiled smelling the fresh pine smell before letting him lean against the small porch fence that surrounded the building.

Rhoda helped by walking on Steve’s other side, his blind side for the moment, and keeping close, just in case the other man stumbled or lost balance while walking through the portal and into the forested area. He got to the porch with Tony and Steve and then said he’d be back to check on them in a few days. He headed back through the portal and it closed behind him, leaving Tony and Steve on their own.

Steve took a breath and nodded at Tony with a soft, but tired, smile. “I’m more than ready,” he answered. “It’s beautiful out here. The scents… the sights… it’s amazing. I’m sure inside is just as beautiful.”

Tony could see Steve was tired with everything going on and he happily moved to bring the other somewhere close, somewhere he could help him up, and he got him to the door making sure to take his time. “As your strength grows we’ll be outside more, I’ll take you along my favourite trails and everything. This place is amazing.” He smiled sweetly before he sighed softly just enjoying the fresh air after feeling cooped up for so long. “Come on, let’s get you to the sofa at least, let you rest up some.”

Steve smiled softly and let Tony help him to the sofa and he sat down with a soft sigh. “This is nice,” he told the other man, keeping hold of Tony’s hand. “It’s beautiful here. Peaceful. The fresh scents outside were amazing, too. Thank you for wanting to bring me here, Tony. It means more to me than you know. I appreciate you wanting to help me out and wanting me here with you.”

Tony smiled softly when he heard the other and he leaned close to the other just holding him close. “I got you, I was gonna wait for you regardless of how long it took, know you’re gonna need more support now than ever before.” He helped him to the sofa before he helped him settle down and offered him a blanket. “Here comfort, something to get yourself comfortable with.”

Steve took the blanket and smiled softly as he leaned against Tony. “Thank you,” he whispered. “I’m so very lucky to have you. I’m so grateful that you’re okay..”

Tony hugged him gently and rubbed his back trying to soothe him. “I got you, and well, I’m not as good as I used to be, could be much better than I am now, but I do what I can where I can when I can.”

Clint was wondering through the forest in his wolf form as suddenly the smell off blood and the one of another creature went into his nose. “Vampire!” He growled realising what the smell was. But what he saw then was nothing he expected.

There was a vampire leaning again a tree with a wooden stake in his chest. The stake had probably missed the heart which is why he was still alive. But with the stake inside his chest the vampire couldn’t move and the hunter in front of him already walked closer to end it once and for all.

Clint watched it and before he knew what he was doing he moved between them. He hate vampires but what he hate even more were hunters. Hunters like this man had killed his mother.

Seeing the giant wolf the hunter tried to attack him but Clint was faster. He jumped on him and ripped the poor hunters throat out with his teeth.

“I doubt anyone of them would. Werewolves are too proud and all about the pack. I’m the black sheep. And you know what happens when a sheep meets some wolves. There’s no going back for me.”

Tony wrapped an arm around the other and kissed the top of his head gently. “Well then, they lost out, they don’t know how good of a thing they had and now they are screwed.” He spoke softly with a sweet smile.

The big storm was three year ago now. It was three years ago now that a big wave flushed Clint into a small pool of a small house right next to the ocean.
And it was three years ago now that they found him; that they trapped him into a net and locked him into a small tank to make him the new attraction of their circus.
Now he had to do stupid tricks like jumping through a burning hoop and every time he refuse to do it they gave him a electic shock or they let him stay hungry for days or worse.

image

The goddess watched them and for a second there was something like sympathy on her face but that quickly disappeared. “I told you. You either kill him and leave a merman or you don’t leave at all.” She said and Clint cried out in pain as one of the leopard seals bite into his tail and pulled them both into the deep dark cold water. Clint quickly let off Tony and tried to fight for their lives but then there was a bright blue and green light and then everything went black around Clint. He was sure they were dying.

Tony held the knife tight and shook before he moved to try and defend the mer only to feel he was pushed away. He felt his body growing slower and number and he feared he would die before protecting Clint only to see a strange light and felt his whole body fade as the world turned black. He woke in a panic feeling himself on a warm beach, looking around seeing no sign of the boat or even the cold water that had been around them. His body felt sore but it seemed he had survived his encounter before quickly looking in panic for Clint.

Clint panicked as he woke up lying in the sad. He was on tthe land. This was the worst. He needed to get back into the water before he dries out or before someone finds him. But as he started to crawl towards the water he saw something that made it all so much worse. His beautiful and strong tail was gone and he had two legs. “No! No, no, no. Please no.”

Tony reached out gently and lay a hand on him. “Clint, hey, beathe, please.” He was shaking a little seeing Clint so broken, seeing him so lost and hurt and he frowned deeply as he gently knelt down beside the man he loved seeing the pure pain in his face. “She…I…Clint I am so sorry, I am so fucking sorry.” He looked over the other more fighting tears knowing Clint had hated the idea of having legs and turning human. “I..I know you..you don’t want this…”

Clint was completely broken. He was unable to think and speak and just let himself fall into Tony arms. He was a human now, he never would be able to go back home into the ocean. He never again will be able to chase and catch the most delicious fish or dace together with the whales. “She hates me.” Clint muttered his face burried in Tony’s chest. The merman was sure the goddess did that to punish him because he brought Tony to her.

Tony held onto the man before him and buried his head into the other. “This is all my fault, if…I'f I’d…I’d just let you go, let you be wild…” He shook his head and clung to the other tightly. “I’m so sorry, I am so fucking sorry.” He buried his face into the other’s shoulder before he pulled back gently looking to Clint. “We…we will figure something out, we have to figure this out, but…but when you’re ready.”

Clint calmed down again and looked at Tony. “Tony. Stop. This is not your fault. It was my idea to visit the goddess. I lead you there even though I knew it was stupid and dangerous. I got what I deserve. But at least you are save.” Clint smiled despite the tears in his eyes. “We…we should leave before someone sees us.” He said. “Also I’m naked.”

Tony wrapped his arms around the other after wiping tears away gently and he licked at his lips a little nervously and anxiously. He took a very deep breath before he nodded a little and hummed softly. He took off his shirt and lay it over the other before gently scooping him up to carry him from the beach. “She….she’s your god though, I…I didn’t want this to happen.” He spoke softly before he carried the other into the nearby village hoping to find somewhere safe. He knew he could give something, could get money somehow, and he luckily had his wallet with him able to use a bank card that was tucked in to get a room for them both.

“I noticed but I didn’t realise it would be this much.” He chuckled lightly before he took a deep breath and sighed softly. “I should have known you’d cause me more and more trouble.” He chuckled and winked playfully at the other. “Where can we go? Where do we walk? I’ve not been through the whole of this park before.”

“Well now you know. You still can leave and find yourself a pretty vampire instead.” Clint grinned. “Let’s just walk and see where we end up.”

Tony chuckled and smiled softly before he held his hand gently. “If I wanted some vampire that then I’d have gone to some stick up ass ball or something to get someone there. Much prefer my companions to have free spirit.”

“That’s how vampire date? That sounds really boring.” Clint chuckled and held Tony’s hand.

Tony linked their fingers and he smiled softly. “Not how all do it, but it was how mine did it, us higher borne crap gotta keep the like pure and lineage perfect. Can only do it with moronic balls. Get good attention from them and well, just enjoy being numb.”

“Oh. That sounds bad. My parents choosed a mate for me. I never saw her before but it’s about bringing packs together, keeping the peace. You learn to love your mate if you’re lucky or you just live with it. Luckily I got cast out of my pack before all that.” Clint smiled. His own family had outcasted him simply because Clint was gay but still he loved them and he missed them.

Tony hummed softly and sighed lightly hearing the other. “Well htey lost one of the best members of their pack, I am sure of that.” He leaned close to tuck his head into Clint’s shoulder walking with him and enjoying the fresh air. “Hopefully some of them will come back to you, will come see you for who you are, that you are someone wonderfully incredible. Now then, we’ve enjoyed our picnic, we’ve had this wonderful fresh air, now what do we want to do?”

Steve nodded and squeezed Tony’s hand gently. “Long as I get to keep you,” he whispered, tears breaking from behind his eyes. He shifted a bit, wincing even more this time and let out a shaky breath. “How long do I have to stay here? Where are we anyway? Wakanda? The compound… it’s gone, right? It can be rebuilt, though?”

Tony held his hand and nodded. “You’ll have me all to yourself big man.” he gently wiped the tears away before he saw the wincing. “We need you to rest up, just a little more for us, and you’re safe, we’re in Wakanda, in a special unit. We’re not gonna have you go just yet when Shuri can do so much good. The compound is gone, but I will sort it being rebuilt, it’s my old plot of land anyway so I’ll just get a team out here like before.”

Steve sniffed softly and nodded. “Stay with me? I don’t… wanna be alone… I mean, I know you need to rest, to sleep and all too, but just.. be here when I’m awake whenever you can, please?” He asked softly. He smiled softly. “Gotta love having a team that can build for you while we get some peace and quiet away from everything at your cabin…”

Tony nodded softly and relaxed back against the seat. “I won’t be going anywhere, they’re gonna be setting a bed up for me so i can be near with you.” He lay a gentle hand on his forehead checking he wasn’t too warm, before he took a very long and deep breath relaxing out. “I’ve got some ideas, some plans, we can have the cabin as a safe place, somewhere secure and private that no one but a strict few know about.”

Steve nodded slowly. “I like that idea,” he said softly, turning his head a bit at the press of Tony’s hand to his forehead. It felt nice and cool against his skin. His eyes closed for a moment. “Tell me about the cabin,” he whispered softly, tiredly. “Tell me about all of it… wanna picture it… and picture us getting to go there and grow old together…”

Tony liked at his lips a little before he saw the other leaning into him. He smiled widely thinking of the cabin before he took a very long and steady breath. “Well where on earth do I even start? How do I even start? It’s beautful. The view of the lake, the forest around it, the beautiful space, it’s somewhere you can just take a moment away and breathe the fresh air and the wonderful feeling of just being there without worrying about what’s coming.”

Steve smiled softly and closed his eyes as Tony was talking. He could picture it and it left him with a sense of calm he hadn’t expected to feel. He managed to settle, despite the pain, and drifted off into a very light sleep while Tony talked.

A few hours later, he’d had the chance to see whomever had been around waiting to see him after everything had happened. By that evening, Shuri had told them Steve would need a couple more days in Wakanda before he could be moved back to the states once more.

tony had stayed with him the whole time he was there telling him of the cabin and everything they could do out there with the peace and quiet together. He was just glad that Steve would finally pass on the mantal and have someone else fight after all the time they fought together.

He had a bed moved into the room so he could stay with him and he relaxed in the seat letting everyone come to the room glad that they could see how he was healing. It had seemed to serum was slowly working, very slowly helping the scarring heal but it would have some permanent elements.

Steve turned his head, wincing slightly as he did so, to look at Tony, a soft sigh of relief coming through as he did so. “Tony…” he whispered softly. “You’re okay?” He shifted his hand, trying to reach out to the other man. The scaring on his arm, his upper body on the right side, along his neck and face were obviously visible but they were slowly healing. He didn’t look nearly as he bad on the field. “I couldn’t remember… I wasn’t sure…”

Tony took his hand as it reached out and he smiled sodftly to him tucking closer as he watched the other. “I’m here, I’m alive, we’re all okay thanks to you Steve and everything you did. Not the smartest move, but you’ve been lucky it seems.” He hummed softly before taking a very long breath. “So, we’re all alive, we’re all back, but you, well you took a nasty hit using the gauntlet like that. It’s not done you much good, and it’s not gonna be a good idea to get bac into fighting, it might be best for you to come to the cabin with me, away from the press and stress.”

Steve nodded slowly, listening to Tony. “I can feel it.. the pain… the burns…” he whispered softly. “But yes… I’m done… last hurrah and all… I like the idea of… going to the cabin with you. Sounds quiet… and peaceful and not so lonely as if I went off on my own or something.”

Tony smiled softly before he looked over the other worried. “You can stll feel the pain? Shit, not good, not fun, okay maybe we can look at getting you something help it for now.” He didn’t want Steve hurting after everything he did, he was just glad to have the man safe. “You’re not gonna be on your own for a while while we get you all patched up.”

“Long as I’m with you, I can take anything,” he whispered softly. “So I’ll retire… but someone… someone will have to take my place… maybe Sam… he… they came back right? The others? They’re all still here, right?”

Tony hummed and leaned against the bed before he shook his head. “No one will need to take your place Steve. No one is filling in anyone’s shoes but there will be others who will be fighting. Everyone’s come back handsome, everyone that was snapped have come back to us. But we gotta give them time handsome, we gotta give them chance.”
